A Walking Tour of Old Rodez

A visit to the Cathedral is an excellent prelude for a walking tour of the town’s historical centre, either with a guide, or on your own. A sequentially marked itinerary will take you back, through the historical centre’s, two thousand years of history (map on page 10). |

The Cathedral and the bell-tower
|
|
When you arrive, the cathedral Notre Dame de Rodez will greet you with its late Gothic style and its red sandstone bell-tower. This majestic monument tells the history of the Rouergue capital in its own way. |

The Fenaille Museum
|
The Fenaille Museum of Archeology and History in the Rouergue is situated in the very center, on the townhall square.
Thanks to its activity hall, this museum is dedicated to the whole family. Its collection of menhir statues is the largest in France and includes the “Dame de Saint Sernin”, which has been exhibited in Europe’s major capitals. |

Denys Puech Fine Arts Museum

Just a few steps from the Fenaille Museum, you can visit the Denys Puech fine arts museum, named according to the eminent sculptor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, in 1884, and whose work reveals a penchant for antiquity. |

The Haras National Stud Farm
|
|
Situated in the heart of the Rodez city, on the ways of Compostelle, this ancient Chartreuse dating from the 16th and 17th Centuries, is situated in a park of 6 hectares. Among the 50 Haras boarders (10 different races), there is the Arab thoroughbred standard named Dormane, the world fame chief of race. The Haras activities intervene in the main horse's network (reproduction, improving and protections of the races…) |

GRAND RODEZ
Stay on a bit longer and visit some of the historic sites neighboring Rodez-center.

You can start with ONET-LE-CHATEAU
|
|
In the north of the Grand Rodez, the town of Onet le Château covers 40km2. With 10 607 inhabitants, it ranks as the 4th largest town in the departement of Aveyron |

Then, get back on the road and head for SAINTE-RADEGONDE, to the southeast.
|
In southeastern Grand Rodez, the town of Sainte Radegonde covers some 30km2 and counts 1,400 inhabitants.
|

|
|
Next, stop at the village of Le Monastère, built along the banks of the Aveyron River.
|
|
Also in the southeastern part of Grand Rodez, the town of Le Monastère spreads out over the Puech Plateau. Situated at the confluence of the Aveyron and Briane rivers. It covers 673 hectares and counts 1870 inhabitants (known as ‘Monastériens’). |

Continue your way around Rodez, and stop in OLEMPS.

In the south of the Grand Rodez, the town of Olemps covers an area of 14km2. Its population is close to 3,500. |

In LUC, to the south of OLEMPS, leave the main road and visit the village.
|
|
Luc-Primaube is located at the southern entrance of the Grand Rodez via RN88, and covers 2,685 hectares and counts 4,860 inhabitants. |

You will then come to DRUELLE
|
|
In the western portion of Grand Rodez, the town of Druelle covers a plateau sitting high atop the Aveyron, covering an area of 36km2 and counting 1,747 inhabitants (Druellois). |

You can finish your tour by a visit of the charming village of SEBAZAC-CONCOURES
|
|
At the northern entrance of Grand Rodez, via the road D988, the town of Sébazac-Concoures covers an area of 26km2 and counts 2,865 inhabitants (Sébazacois). |
